Penrose - Newby Wedding
Iain Samuel of Pocklington was given a copy of this photograph (without the names) and he passed it on saying that he was told it had been taken in Bishop Wilton and that Ellen Brigham was in the group. It didn’t take long to identify the backdrop as Lime Tree House and then for Nancy Hutchinson to identify the occasion and to provide the names. Some time later, just by chance, an account of the wedding was found in the Howdenshire Chronicle and Pocklington Weekly News. Evidently the bride’s sister, Hilda Newby, was bridesmaid (sitting to the bride’s left) as was the bridegroom’s sister, Miss Penrose, (presumably sitting to the bridegroom’s right). William Goodall from Scarborough was the best man and Harry Newby was the groomsman (both named in the photo). The surprising thing about the newspaper account is that it lists the presents and the 56 wedding guests who gave them! For instance, the bridegroom gave the bride a piano. A week later the newspaper apologised for not saying who made the bride-cake and the beautiful dresses. It also said that the photograph of the bridal party was taken by F. Slights of Pocklington, a copy of which could be seen in the window of his shop.
