From the map it appears there is a definite ‘well line’ on both sides of the village. The water levels seem to rise and fall and so I can only assume that most of the wells are fed by underground springs. The wells would originally have been drawn by bucket, with the mechanical pumps added later. I expect that many wells were shared between households.

Richard Sefton pointed out a mound in the front of the Manor House field which he reckons was one of the earliest village communal wells, before most of the houses as we know them today were built.
